Street Swap
Victoria Ling
Victoria Ling’s new personal series Street Swap, inspired by the wonderful, eclectic mix of items shared to give away in her street’s WhatsApp group. The joyful circular economy of the Street Swap: one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
Victoria wanted to shoot these everyday ‘found’ objects like luxury goods: they bring a different kind of luxury – community, sustainability and kindness.
The descriptions of each object on the WhatsApp group are equally as essential to this series. The bowl for instance, is captioned “Beautiful fruit bowl available at 2 Claverdale – a birthday present I don’t use“; or the Spoons “Antique serving spoons from clearing my mum’s house; DM me if you’d like them.” Each caption reveals a truth and history behind each object, another luxury in itself.
Plant – “Small spider plants outside 40 Athlone – help yourself.”
Decanter – “Glass wine decanter outside no.10 Claverdale”
Mirror – “Vanity mirror; I’ll put it on the wall outside 20 Claverdale”
Clamp – “Any DIY folk able to use this clamp? Not sure why we have it, but it looks brand new.”
Suitcase – “Carry-on case outside 53 Claverdale – ready for the summer holidays.”
Kettlebell – “My tenant left his gym equipment; if anyone works out, they are outside 6 Athlone”
Ball – “Would anyone like a volleyball? Clearing out the kids’ old stuff. DM me.”
Globe – “Ideal for a school or nursery – great globe on offer – just missing the power lead to light up, but sure you could replace it.”
